Residents of the 9th Commission District:
I may have to start phoning you at home rather than knocking on your door. The weather is certainly not cooperating. I promise that the calls will come from a real person (including me) that lives in the district.
The newspapers may start coming out with some information in the next week or two(and possibly endorsements) of all who are in this race. Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to review the articles.
Well, that's all for now....

On the trail...
Dear Voters:
I am currently campaigning door-to-door in the 9th Commission District (Garden City, Dearborn Heights, and Redford Twp.). I hope that I will get the opportunity to speak with you one-on-one. I will be attending some community events as well. If I do miss you, I hope that you will contact me via phone, email, or this blog.
Please let me know if your Community and/or group is having an event. I would be happy to attend your function. Just tell me the where and when!

Noise Ordinance change (Ice Cream Truck controversy)
Ice Cream Trucks
(Ordinance change-Exception for Ice cream vendors and Background Check Suggestion)
It is unfortunate that many of the City Council's quotes (including mine) on this issue have been taken out of context by the media. I suppose it made a better story on the news, but was less than factual. The most used of my quotes (“We don't want to discourage people from making a living selling ice cream, but we have to have some sort of control," Councilwoman Janet Badalow said.) was in reference to criminal background checks for vendors and not the noise issue! This is a separate issue from the noise and is much more important. I am interested in protecting children in our City. Schools require background checks for one reason...safety. I am certain that you will agree (along with many parents in our city) that safety should be a priority. Other cities in our area already implement a background check in their registration process.
Please see the recent article in the Detroit News (6-19-2008) Ice Cream Truck Operator Arrested on Sex Charge (http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008806190400)
In reference to the ordinance change, I do suggest that everyone reads the original ordinance which states that no motorized vehicles can make any noise, etc... We changed the ordinance to allow ice cream trucks to make bell ringing noise. I think this will help the ice cream vendors. It also addresses noise complaints from our residents.

A quote from Dearborn Heights Mayor Dan Paletko: "The ice cream truck bell is a part of America," Paletko said. "I remember as a young boy that you'd hear that and you wanted some ice cream. [But] what they're doing is allowing something that wasn't there before. The [current] ordinance makes it very clear you're not to use noise of any sort."
OLD VERSION
Sec. 22-32. Use of noisemaking devices.
It shall be unlawful for any huckster, vendor or peddler to make any noise while on the streets or public places of the city by the use of a horn, bell, whistle or other apparatus for the purpose of attracting the attention of the public, it being the intent of this section that such conduct constitutes a public nuisance.
(Code 1969, § 7.217(6))
NEW VERSION
Sec. 22-32 Use of noisemaking devices
(a)It shall be unlawful for any huckster, vendor or peddler to make any noise while on the streets or public places of the city by the use of a horn, bell, whistle or other apparatus for the purpose of attracting the attention of the public, it being the intent of this section that such conduct constitutes a public nuisance.
(b) a huckster, street vendor, or peddler who sells ice cream, non-alcoholic beverages, treats, and similar confections may use a bell or a device with multiple bells on it, neither of which may use any sort of electronic amplification, for the purpose of attracting the attention of the public provided all the following conditions are met: (i) the huckster, street vendor or peddler uses a motor vehicle, motorcycle, tricycle, or bicycle in the operation of his business. (ii) the huckster, street vendor or peddler has any required license to operate a motor vehicle, motorcycle, tricycle, or bicycle used in operation of his business. (iii) the motor vehicle, motorcycle, tricycle, or bicycle used by the huckster, street vendor or peddler in the operation of his business is registered and licensed as required by law. (iv) the huckster, street vendor or peddler is fully licensed to engage in his business as required by this code and by the Wayne County Department of Health. (v) noise generated by the bell or the device with multiple bells on it does not exceed the level permitted by this code or by any other law.

Issues in Wayne County-what I will do...
Economy: It is important that we effectively utilize our tax dollars. I would push for a fair allocation of county dollars to all communities, encourage additional efficiencies, and review the procurement process.
Economic Development: I am most interested in projects that will promote long-term stability in our region. Development should not only stimulate business now, but also create an environment that will encourage more business in the future. Newly created jobs will then become a permanent part of our local economy. I am also a proponent of redeveloping areas that have been abandoned instead of developing new land that could be reserved for green space.
Environmental protection: As we are a region with many different watersheds and green spaces, I would work to restore, protect, and improve these natural resources. Only by protecting and restoring our natural resources, will we all enjoy a safe and healthy place to live.

Why am I running for this office?
Simply put, I am running to make a difference... The County has a massive budget, which is partially funded by the property tax dollars we all pay. I want to make certain our dollars are being used wisely.
As an active member of SEMCOG (DH alternate, Finance & Budget; EPAC Committees) I work with other municipalities to find regional solutions to our problems that benefit all of our communities.
I encourage and support accountability in all levels of government, and insist upon it in my community. I have worked as a Tax accountant and a Financial Advisor.
I believe I have the financial acumen, keen public relations skills, and a genuine concern for the future of Wayne County and our State. These attributes will guide me in making responsible, intuitive, and caring choices for all of us as the next Wayne County Commissioner in District 9.
